How to use Mala Beads

How to Use Mala BeadsFor the practice of japa, you use a mala of 108 beads, plus the larger "meru" bead. This assists in repeating your mantra a certain number of times (multiples of 108). The use of the beads can also assist you in staying focused during meditation.

Hold the string of beads in your right hand, over the middle finger. The index finger does not touch the beads. Starting at the meru, pull the beads towards you, one by one, between your thumb and middle finger. For each inhalation/exhalation, repeat your mantra and pull a bead. One bead is pulled per mantra repetition. When the mind begins to wander, bring it back to the breath, the beads and your mantra. eg. While pulling the bead, inhale "Om Namah", exhale "Sivaya". Once you reach the meru, you do not cross it. Turn the beads around and continue in the reverse direction.
